Summer TV – Better Late Than Never?

Summer TVIts almost time to start thinking about fall TV but we haven’t talked much about summer TV! Between working and attempting to date and writing about my dating attempts (a tiny bit), there has been no time for writing about TV, but I have been watching some. How do people find time to do stuff AND write about the stuff they do? I don’t even DO that much. Oh wait, I work pretty much all the time. Well let’s not get in to that. Let’s talk about summer TV.

The low light of summer TV, of course, is that I have not been able to watch Big Brother, Dexter, or Ray Donovan for over a month because of the Time Warner-CBS/Showtime blackout in NYC. “The Sommelier” (yes, he is still in the picture, kind of) showed me how to download episodes illegally from the internet (which I do feel a tiny bit guilty about) but I keep holding out that they will resolve this so I don’t have to sit all squished up in front of my tiny laptop or figure out how to get a video to HDMI converter cable and speakers so I can hook it all up to my TV. If this is my worst problem, clearly I will survive. Big Brother was getting really good though!

I was also really getting in to Ray Donovan. For those of you who can watch Showtime, they are having a marathon this weekend so you can catch up. Great show. Liev Schreiber..awesome. He is a fixer, like Olivia Pope, but not as…moral. He will hurt people and not feel bad about it at all. But, like Dexter, he is basically a good guy, except when he cheats on his wife. Maybe he is not really a good guy. He is messed up. I have a thing for forgiving messed up guys, I guess.

I am watching The Bridge on FX. I was lukewarm on it at first, but it has grown on me. I was SO confused during the first episode and I thought Diane Kruger was either a really bad actress or there was something really wrong with the show. By the end of the episode, I realized her character has asberger syndrome (like max on Parenthood!) which makes her a little off socially but also a really good cop (and a really good actress!) The show starts with a murder on the bridge between the US and Mexico and then the police departments from the two border cities have to work together to solve the crime. Then more murders happen. You get the gist.

Side note – while watching The Bridge on FX, I saw the teaser for American Horror Story: Coven. It’s creepy. Can’t wait.

One great side effect of the CBS/Showtime blackout was that I finally watched House of Cards.  I did not watch all in one sitting but  think I finished it off in about a week. Amazing.

After House of Cards, I needed more to fill the void, so I started watching The White Queen on Starz. The White Queen is one of those historical fiction mini- series events based on one of the historical royal scandalous times in England. I think the Starz web page describes it better than I could “a riveting tale of love and lust, betrayal and murder, vibrantly woven through the stories of three different, yet equally relentless women – Elizabeth Woodville, Margaret Beaufort and Anne Neville.” Its entertaining.

Finally, Breaking Bad is back. So curious to see how that all ends up.

I guess that’s it. I also watched a few movies. To highlight the overall shallowness of my entertainment lately, I will reveal that I watched 21 Jump Street last night (the Jonah Hill/Channing Tatum version) and I laughed out loud at parts.  Yup, its been a high brown entertainment summer. Maybe I should read a non-fiction book this weekend. Or the New York Times? There is some serious stuff going on across the world that I should probably stay on top of.
